The Feline Renal Diet Finder

Cats with chronic kidney disease do best on a therapeutic renal diet — but many are picky. Work through every option methodically, log what your cat thinks, and share the results with your Roam Vet team.

How to run a food trial: offer one new diet at a time alongside the current food, transition over 7–14 days, and serve wet food slightly warmed. Never introduce a new diet while your cat feels unwell — cats form lasting aversions. Any renal diet your cat will eat beats the "ideal" one they refuse.

My cat's IRIS stage:

Choose a stage to see the diets that fit it — or "Not sure" to see everything. Your cat's IRIS stage comes from their bloodwork, urine, and blood pressure; if you don't know it, ask your Roam Vet doctor and we'll mark it on your visit summary.

The CKD care rhythm

  • Every 6 monthsRecheck labs — bloodwork, urinalysis, and blood pressure — so we can restage your cat's kidney disease and adjust the diet, binder, or medication plan. More often in later stages or after any change. We draw everything at home.
  • Every monthWeigh your cat at home (a digital baby scale works well) and write it down. Steady weight loss is the earliest warning sign in CKD — earlier than any blood test.
  • Every dayGlance at appetite, thirst, urine clump size, vomiting, and energy. Changes in these are worth a message before they become emergencies.
  • Same dayCall us if your cat hasn't eaten in 24 hours. CKD cats can't safely skip meals, and food aversion sets in fast when they feel nauseated.

This list covers therapeutic renal diets and select phosphorus-restricted foods available in the U.S. as of mid-2026; formulations and availability change, so confirm with our team. Prescription diets require an active veterinary authorization. Non-prescription "kidney support" foods are not equivalent to therapeutic renal diets — use them only as a fallback we've discussed for your cat. This tool is guidance, not a substitute for an exam.
